Marcia Atkinson Christensen

Painter Marcia Atkinson Christensen is a non-traditional watercolor artist who has exhibited her works throughout the United States. She traveled to Africa for the first time in 1999 and has since returned there more than a dozen times to gather material for her Fellowship of Women series of paintings. Her recent work assimilates the feelings and impressions from that travel, and she has concentrated on painting the Masai women from Kenya and the Ewe women from Ghana.

Her additional work concentrates on the repetition of patterns found in nature. She uses a combination of flowers and zebras in imaginative combinations of watercolor collaged paper paintings emphasizing the unity of all living creatures.

Christensen has won many prizes for her work, including the 2008 Currier Museum of Art Friel Award for Watercolor.

She also created over 32 illustrations for The Grey Ghost, a children’s book written by Julie Hahnke. The book was named to the Kids Indy Next List and was voted third in the country by independent booksellers.

Christensen is the former arts chair at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine, where she taught art for 14 years. She is also a juried artist member and past board member of the New Hampshire Art Association.
